The story of Batik Print

Ujjain Batik Print is a globally renowned, traditional textile craft centered in the historic town of Bherugarh along the banks of the Shipra River in Madhya Pradesh. This ancient art form, which was officially awarded the Geographical Indication (GI) tag in 2023, relies on a meticulous wax-resist dyeing technique. Artisans use hand-carved wooden blocks or specialized pen-like tools to apply melted paraffin wax onto fabrics like cotton and silk. The wax acts as a barrier, preventing the dyes from penetrating those specific areas, which results in beautifully contrasted, vibrant patterns.
A defining characteristic of Ujjain Batik is its signature “crackle effect,” which occurs when the cooled wax cracks slightly during the dyeing process, allowing fine veins of color to seep through the lines. Historically, the craft flourished in Bherugarh as diverse textile printing traditions migrated and blended in the region over centuries, eventually scaling into a major community livelihood by the 1960s. Today, these distinct geometric and floral motifs are widely popular across India, adorning everything from traditional sarees and dress materials to contemporary bedsheets and home furnishings.
